Nell qualified as a teacher in 1997 and spent 19 years working as an English teacher, Literacy Lead and Assistant Headteacher in the Midlands and later in a secondary school in Hampshire.  Her current role as Headteacher in a hospital setting has further cemented her belief that all children deserve the very best teaching and learning experiences, and should have access to an enriching and stimulating curriculum, even when they may be facing personal challenges or a period of ill health.

The school

Southampton Hospital School is an Alternative Provision Academy based at Southampton General Hospital.  The school is focused on enabling pupils with medical needs to access education and is organised into three key areas to accomplish this: the General Hospital Wards, Bursledon House residential unit and our Medical Outreach Provision.  Across the service, skilled teachers offer a bespoke curriculum designed to meet the individual needs of every pupil.  The school believes that all children with medical needs are entitled to excellent educational, pastoral and spiritual support during a period of their lives when they are unable to attend their home schools.  We are committed to working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to support young people either on their return to school within the framework of a smooth transition process or to identify the best provision post discharge.

Cate completed her degree at Chichester University and qualified in 2004 following a successful career within the Early Years provision.

Cate taught Year R and Key Stage 1 for 4 years before becoming an Early Years Leader.  She progressed her Leadership skills through becoming a Leading Practitioner across the city of Southampton and than securing the Assistant Head role at Shirley Infant school.  Cate is very proud to have been a part of the growing leadership roles within Shirley Infant school and becoming the Head of school for 4 years and than successfully taking on the full Headship last year.  Cate also holds the role of a Specialist Leader of Education for the Portswood Teaching Alliance.

Cate is passionate about the Early Years and the importance of getting this right for every child in order to have the best start.  She strives for children being given the opportunity to learn by ensuring that the development of the whole child is embedded and planned for throughout the curriculum. Opportunities and sequences of learning are carefully and skilfully designed to ensure that pupils’ personal, social and emotional development takes priority. As a result the children are ready to learn and are well prepared for the next stage of their education.   She believes in an integrated approach to children's learning journeys recognising pupils needs to develop explicit skills within a discrete subject.  Cate is able to see the strengths in all children and ensures they are all seen as individuals.  She strives tirelessly to ensure that pupils are happy independent learners where learning is pitched so they can succeed.

Cate's leadership values are founded on trust, high expectations and inclusivity.  She believes in order to have a school that works the best for the children and the community you have to have a hard working and dedicated team.  She is very proud of the team she leads and works within and could not do what she does without them
